Poinsettia plants are actually native to Mexico and Central America, but they are commonly gifted and seen as a popular Christmas floral in North America. Due to being native to a warmer climate, poinsettia can be sensitive to the cold. There is a misconception that you can bring them outside when you buy them at a grocery store, right to your car. But this can risk freezing/shocking the plant.
"In today's language of flowers poinsettias symbolize good cheer and success and are said to bring wishes of mirth and celebration."

Poinsettia are a popular host(ess) gift, or even Christmas gift to be delivered to a loved one if you live away from them. They are quite long-lasting and forgiving if you are not the best at remembering to water. What do I mean by forgiving? They will perk back up upon watering if they have started to droop from lack of water!
I personally love poinsettia, they can come in a variety of colors and sizes! They start at the smallest in a 4" plant pot, and I have seen them as large as a 10" plant pot. Poinsettia are traditionally available in red, white and pink, but in recently years have started to become available in fantasy colors such as turquoise, blue, spotted varieties, purple and more!
Poinsettia can be toxic to cats, not as fatal as lilies are which can cause kidney failure in less than 24 hours. Poinsettia will make cats sick, but will not be fatal. I do recommend you still keep an eye on your loved four-legged companion either way! I have my cat at home and do keep poinsettia out of the house for this reason.
Top tips:
Water well but don't let it "sit in water"
Keep away from drafts (windows, outside doors)
To make your poinsettia extra festive add some stems of fresh pine!
Add ribbon to dress it up!
