Plants That Thrive In The Bathroom

Updated: Nov 18, 2021

We can love plants all we want, but if we don’t give them the conditions they require, they won’t necessarily love us. Luckily, there are plants that do particularly well in specific conditions, so we can be surrounded by beautiful plants anywhere, including the toilet!

Here are 5 plants that tend to fare best in bathroom conditions:

Orchids

Orchids are gorgeous but can feel finicky for many people. However, as long as you have a window where they can get plenty of indirect sunlight, and you have them in moist and well-drained soil, they will thrive in the humidity of the bathroom.

Fiddle Leaf Fig

Even though we have them in our high maintenance plants post, Fiddle Leaf Figs can do well in a bathroom, especially if it's flooded with natural light. They will love the warmth and moisture of the bathroom. If you have the right space for them (it’s a large plant) they can make a real statement.

Air Plant

Because they aren’t potted in soil, these plants do great in humid environments where they can soak up the water from the surrounding atmosphere. As long as you have lots of indirect light, you can put these guys just about anywhere in your bathroom, without needing to consider their soil or even a container! Check out our air plants here and here.

Snake Plant

This perennial favourite was featured in our low maintenance plants post for a good reason – these plants are easy to care for. But especially so in the bathroom! They love the humidity, and can tolerate both low indirect light (as well as bright indirect light), making them especially good for bathrooms without much in terms of windows.

Bamboo

If you want a little spa-like ambiance, without a lot of maintenance, bamboo is a great choice. It doesn’t require much sun, so bamboo can work in even small bathrooms without much light exposure. You can grow them in soil or simply in water (just make sure you change the water regularly).

Bathrooms look beautiful with some life in them. Pick the right plants, and your bathroom can be a great place to showcase some natural beauty.
